In the summer of 1760 three British armies closed on Montreal, the last French stronghold in Canada. General Jeffery Amherst's column, which included the 42nd, came the long way. It set out from Oswego across the eastern end of Lake Ontario and went down the St. Lawrence in open boats. Late in August it besieged and took Fort Lévis, on an island above the rapids, then ran the rapids themselves, where boats were wrecked and men drowned. Amherst landed on Montreal Island on 6 September as the other two armies arrived from Quebec and Lake Champlain. Two days later Governor Vaudreuil signed the capitulation, and New France passed to Britain.

Facing them, place Compagnies Franches de la Marine Standing Firing.
