Sir Peter Halkett, colonel of the 44th Foot, marched with General Braddock in 1755 with his youngest son, James, serving beside him. On 9 July, at the Monongahela, both were killed. Three years later another son, Major Francis Halkett, came west with General Forbes's army, determined to find them. A Native guide who had fought on the French side remembered an officer falling near a distinctive tree, with a young officer dying across him. In October 1758 a search party found two skeletons lying across each other at that spot. Sir Peter had worn an artificial tooth, and when the bones were examined Francis recognised his father. The two were buried together with military honours.
Don Troiani paints a grenadier of the 44th as he would have marched with Braddock, standing with his musket upright and bayonet fixed. His mitre cap has a yellow front with the crowned GR cipher, and its red flap carries the white horse of Hanover. He wears a red coat with the regiment's yellow facings and patterned lace, a buff waistcoat and breeches, and brown leggings buttoned up to the thigh. A tin canteen, a black cartridge pouch marked GR and a fur pack complete his campaign kit. Pair it with Tradition of London's British Grenadiers and British Infantry, both in yellow facings and campaign gaiters. For the other side of the Monongahela, add W. Britain's Native American Warrior Getting Ready to Fire from Behind a Tree Stump.
