On 9 July 1755 General Edward Braddock's column crossed the Monongahela River about ten miles short of Fort Duquesne. Coming down the road from the fort was a force of a few hundred French and Canadians and some 600 warriors, most of them from the Great Lakes nations, among them Ottawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi and Wyandot men. When the two sides met in the forest, the warriors spread along the wooded flanks and onto a hill above the British right. They fired from behind trees, logs and the edges of ravines. The redcoats, packed on a narrow road, fired volleys into the smoke at men they rarely saw. In about three hours Braddock's force lost roughly two-thirds of its men killed and wounded, and Braddock himself was mortally wounded.
This warrior crouches low behind a broken, moss-streaked tree stump, bringing his musket up to fire past its edge. He wears a white linen trade shirt with red-painted shoulders and a yellow band on one arm. A beaded strap crosses his chest, and his blue wool leggings are tied with garters at the knee. His hair is drawn up with a red ornament. For a Monongahela scene, line the flank with him, Native American Warrior Kneeling Firing and A Clear Shot – Native Warrior Firing from a Summer Tree. Add Compagnies Franches de la Marine Officer, since Marine officers led the force that left Fort Duquesne that morning.
