Pontiac's warriors had held Fort Detroit under siege since May 1763 when Captain James Dalyell arrived with reinforcements. He talked the commander into a night attack on Pontiac's camp. Before dawn on 31 July about 250 men marched out along the river road. At the narrow bridge over Parent's Creek, warriors waiting in the fields and orchards and behind fences opened fire. The column fell back toward the fort under fire from cover all along the road, and Robert Rogers and his men held a house to cover the retreat. Dalyell was killed. The stream was known afterward as Bloody Run.

The warrior crouches on a branch high up the trunk, his musket laid past it as he sights on the road below. He wears a red roach headdress, a blue breechcloth and red leggings, his upper body bare. The tree is a tall, weathered trunk with one dead limb, its branches in full green summer leaf, set on a base of grey rock, a fallen log and leaf litter.
