A Woodlands war leader could not order anyone to fight. He had to persuade men to follow him, and any warrior could turn for home if he chose. In 1752 Charles Langlade, a 23-year-old Métis trader whose mother was Ottawa, talked about 250 Ottawa and Ojibwe warriors into following him south from the Great Lakes. Their target was Pickawillany, the Miami town in western Ohio where British traders had set up. On 21 June they struck while most of the town's men were away hunting. The traders were taken prisoner, and the Miami leader Memeskia, called Old Briton by the English, was killed. The town was soon abandoned, and many historians count the raid as the first blow of the French and Indian War.

This warrior steps forward with his arm flung out, pointing the way, his musket held low in his other hand. His head is shaved to a scalp lock tied in yellow, and his face is painted half red and half black. A silver disc hangs from his ear. Tattoos mark his shoulder and arms, under silver armbands. A quilled bag and pouches ride at his side over a red breechcloth. His blue leggings are tied with patterned garters above quill-decorated moccasins. Put him at the head of a war party with Native American Warrior Advancing Crouched Down, Native American Warrior Running Barefoot and Native Warrior Yelling War Cry following his lead.
