The crouch is instinct more than sense; a bullet that passes has already missed, and one that hits will not be dodged by ducking, but no soldier under fire runs upright. What actually carries men across open ground is not fearlessness but training and the men beside them — the drilled habit of moving in rushes, and the unwillingness to let down the man to your left. It is among the hardest things a human being is ever asked to do.
