Everything in the body screams at a soldier to stop, and the whole art of infantry is making him go anyway. The two men here are caught in the act — bent double, heads down, running low toward the next scrap of cover as fire snaps overhead. The crouch is instinct more than sense; a bullet that passes has already missed, and one that hits will not be dodged by ducking, but no soldier under fire runs upright. What actually carries men across open ground is not fearlessness but training and the men beside them — the drilled habit of moving in rushes, and the unwillingness to let down the man to your left. It is among the hardest things a human being is ever asked to do.
The two-figure set shows a pair of Waffen-SS infantrymen bent low and moving fast, K98k rifles in hand, camouflage smocks and laden rucksacks — the copy's "young infantrymen" pushing to a new position. They advance under the covering fire of the MG34 Gun Team, alongside the riflemen of Open Fire!, and under their SS Squad Leader. In a diorama, figures caught mid-rush — low, urgent, exposed — bring a tension a line of standing men never can; the eye reads instantly that these two are in real danger.
