Bernard Montgomery gave Britain the land victory it desperately needed. Taking over the Eighth Army in the North African desert in 1942, "Monty" rebuilt its confidence and then broke Rommel at the Second Battle of El Alamein that autumn — the turning point Churchill called "the end of the beginning." A meticulous set-piece planner who refused to attack until everything was ready, he was adored by his men and famous for the black tank beret with its two cap badges. He was also cautious, abrasive, and a relentless self-promoter, and his frictions with the Americans ran deep. His one great gamble, Operation Market Garden, overreached — and gave the language the phrase "a bridge too far."

The figure captures him unmistakably: battledress, hands clasped behind his back, and the two-badge beret, watchful and self-assured. He belongs in an Allied high-command display that captures the coalition's tensions as much as its triumphs — set him under his Supreme Commander General Eisenhower, beside his Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and across the table from his American rival George Patton.

W. Britain model 10080. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure on a sculpted base. Boxed.
