Winston Churchill became Prime Minister on 10 May 1940 — the very day Hitler's armies struck west — and within weeks France had fallen and Britain stood alone. Others in the government argued for seeking terms; Churchill refused, and turned the English language into a weapon instead. In a series of speeches now woven into history — "blood, toil, tears and sweat," "we shall fight on the beaches," "their finest hour" — he told a frightened nation that it would not merely survive but fight on to victory, and somehow made them believe it. That refusal to make peace in the dark summer of 1940 kept the war alive until America and the Soviet Union entered it.

The figure captures him mid-stride with his walking stick, in a dark three-piece suit, bow tie and homburg, on a cobblestone London street. As the anchor of a British wartime display he presides over the men who ran the war — the architect of the air defence, Lord Dowding, whose airmen he called "The Few," his field commander Field Marshal Montgomery, and the Allied Supreme Commander General Eisenhower.

W. Britain model 10082. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure on a sculpted cobblestone base. Boxed.
