Major Richard "Dick" Winters of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne, is one of the most studied small-unit commanders in American military history. On the morning of D-Day, a lieutenant commanding Easy Company, he led the assault on a German battery at Brécourt Manor — four 105mm howitzers firing on Utah Beach — with thirteen men against a defending force several times their number. Taken with limited resources against entrenched troops, the action is still taught at West Point and earned Winters the Distinguished Service Cross. He led Easy through Carentan, Market Garden, and the Bastogne winter, rose to command 2nd Battalion, and ended the war a major — then went home to Pennsylvania and, famously modest, gave the credit to his men.

This figure shows Winters as Captain of Easy Company — the rank he held through autumn 1944, when most of the company's defining actions took place. He stands in the officer's pose: helmet carried at his side rather than worn, web gear over the M1942 jump uniform, an M1911 on his belt and a musette bag under his arm — an officer assessing or briefing rather than in the fight. As the command piece of a Band of Brothers diorama he pairs with Lt. Ronald Speirs and SSG Darrell "Shifty" Powers, both Easy Company, and extends to the Ardennes with Welcome to Bastogne.
