When William F. Fox compiled Regimental Losses in the American Civil War in 1889, the 83rd Pennsylvania stood near the top of his list. The regiment had 282 men killed or mortally wounded in action, second only to the 5th New Hampshire among all Union infantry regiments. The losses came everywhere the Army of the Potomac fought: Gaines's Mill in June 1862, where Colonel John McLane was killed; Second Bull Run; Fredericksburg; Little Round Top, where Strong Vincent fell; then the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. The regiment raised in Erie in 1861 buried two of its colonels and a large share of its original men before the war was over.

The three-piece set shows what that looked like in the moment. One soldier crawls forward on his side with a hand raised, calling for help. Another sits stunned in the grass, holding his head, his rifle still across his lap. The third lies on his back beside his dropped musket and forage cap, beyond help. All three wear K&C's 83rd Pennsylvania uniform: dark blue frock coat with yellow trim, sky-blue trousers, and white gaiters. Set them in front of a firing line in a battle diorama, or pair them with The Walking Wounded, Colonel John W. McLane, or Brigadier General Strong Vincent, the regiment's two fallen commanders.
