The flag this soldier carries was made by Mrs. Matilda Jane Fuller Young — "Maude" — a Houston botanist and school principal who took on the work of producing battle flags for Confederate regiments. Her wool replacement for the 5th Texas Infantry's worn original carried the regiment's Latin motto "Vivere Sat Vincere" — "To Live, It Is Enough to Conquer" — on a dark blue streamer at the top of the staff, the designation "5th REG VOL" on the field, and a central star with the letters T-E-X-A-S placed one between each pair of points. It was first carried at Gaines's Mill in June 1862 and served as the regiment's colors through the rest of the war.

This W. Britain figure depicts the 5th Texas Infantry flagbearer in regulation Confederate gray — single-breasted gray frock coat, gray trousers, the dark blue forage cap (distinguishing him from the 1st and 4th Texas flagbearers who wear slouch hats), the rolled blanket across his chest, the cartridge box and belt — carrying the Young replacement flag with its battle honors painted along the borders. The figure completes the three-Texas-regimental-flag set with the 1st and 4th Texas flagbearers in the same range, building out the Hood's Texas Brigade colors as they appeared from late 1862 onward in a brigade-line diorama. Pair this figure with 1st Texas Flagbearer; with 4th Texas Flagbearer (Wigfall Pattern) for the matched three-color brigade tableau; or with Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, the corps commander under whom the Texas Brigade served from the Seven Days through Appomattox.
