The "double-quick" was the regulation Civil War assault pace — 165 steps per minute, between a fast walk and a jog, the gait an infantry regiment used to cross open ground under fire as quickly as possible. The standard march pace was 90 steps per minute or 110 (the "quick step" for parade). Double-quick was meant for the last few hundred yards of an assault: bayonets fixed, the regiment moving in line of battle at double the normal pace, officers urging the men forward, the drum or bugle calling the cadence. Soldiers in heavy wool uniforms with sixty pounds of kit could maintain double-quick for only a few minutes before exhaustion.
This W. Britain figure depicts a Confederate infantryman at the double-quick — body pitched forward in the running stride, rifle musket held forward at hip level with bayonet fixed and angled toward the enemy, mouth open in the shout that accompanied the charge. He wears the late-war Confederate kit: tan-butternut jacket, brown trousers, broad-brimmed slouch hat, the knapsack on his back and cartridge box on his belt. The figure is a centerpiece for any Confederate assault diorama — Pickett's Charge, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor's failed Federal counter-assault. Pair this figure with Rebel Steel Confederate Charging for a multi-figure charging line; with Confederate Corporal Urging Men Forward as the NCO at the head of the line; or with 1st Texas Flagbearer (3rd Issue) for the regimental colors driving the assault forward.
