Confederate Wearing Shell Jacket Defending, No.2
This is toy soldier - Confederate Wearing Shell Jacket Defending, No.2
This toy soldier, numbered 31349, depicts a Confederate soldier wearing the iconic short jacket of the Army of Northern Virginia. This style of jacket was used from the fall of 1862 until the end of the Civil War. Unlike the longer frock coats of the time, these jackets used less fabric and were commonly referred to as 'shell jackets' or 'depot jackets.' They were typically made from wool or a wool and cotton blend known as 'jean.' While there were variations in construction, the most noticeable differences were in trim, button count, and the use of epaulettes.
