A battalion of Royal-Roussillon sailed for Canada on 3 April 1756 in the same convoy as the new commander, the Marquis de Montcalm, together with a battalion of La Sarre, and reached the St. Lawrence five weeks later. It fought at Fort William Henry in 1757 and at Carillon in 1758, then went down to defend Quebec. On the Plains of Abraham on 13 September 1759 it was broken by British musketry. Tradition in the British 35th Foot holds that its men picked up the white plumes of the routed Royal-Roussillon and wore them in their own hats. A plume was later worked into the badge of the Royal Sussex Regiment, the 35th's successor.
Don Troiani paints a drummer of the regiment from behind, looking over his shoulder. He wears a gold-laced tricorne, with his hair in a braided queue, and a blue coat with red cuffs and turnbacks. Every seam is trimmed in red and white livery lace, which marked a drummer out from the rank and file. His drum hangs at his side, its shell painted with the crowned arms of France and its hoops striped red and white. A brass-hilted sword and white gaiters complete his dress. Hang it beside Don Troiani's Battalion Soldier of the 35th Regiment of Foot, 1755-57, the regiment of the plume tradition. Add Tradition of London's French Infantry command group and W. Britain's French General Marquis de Montcalm, 1759.
