By the winter of 1943 the German army was retreating and bleeding on every front, and its wounded paid a hard price for it. As units were pushed back, encircled, or simply overwhelmed, the orderly evacuation of casualties broke down; a man hit in the open often had no ambulance and no aid station within reach, only whatever help his own comrades could give. Getting a wounded soldier to the rear frequently came down to this — one man half-carrying another through the snow, both of them slowed and exposed, because leaving him was unthinkable. Whatever uniform they wore, the bond between soldiers under fire looked much the same.

The set pairs two soldiers in greatcoats, one taking the weight of a wounded comrade, their 98k rifles and steel helmets marking them as ordinary Landser of the line. It suits a winter-retreat vignette with the greatcoated grenadiers around them — the Grenadier Kneeling and the Grenadier Running with 98k — and mirrors the same cost on the other side of the line, the U.S. Infantry Casualty.
