Eugene Sledge landed on Peleliu on 15 September 1944 as a 60mm mortarman in King Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines — the "Old Breed" of the 1st Marine Division. The island was supposed to fall in four days; it took more than two months. Sledge fought across the coral ridges of the Umurbrogol — "Bloody Nose Ridge" — in heat that touched 115 degrees, then did it again on Okinawa. What sets him apart is that he wrote it down. His memoir With the Old Breed is among the most unflinching accounts of infantry combat ever published, and it later shaped Ken Burns's The War and HBO's The Pacific.
W. Britain sculpts Sledge in motion — crouched low and moving with an M1 Garand in both hands, the camouflaged helmet cover and dungarees of the Pacific Marine, a pack on his back. He is the eyes of the Old Breed, and he ties the division's Peleliu fight together: alongside the WWII Marine Rifleman he served beside, a Marine with SCR-300 radio calling fire onto the ridges, and Chesty Puller, whose 1st Marines bled on the same coral as Sledge's regiment.
W. Britain model 13095. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), solid metal hand-painted in a matte finish. Single foot figure in an advancing pose, boxed in a collector's box.
