The red roll slung across each man's chest is the Stonewall Jackson roll — a blanket, oilcloth groundsheet, and a change of clothes rolled tightly into a horseshoe and tied at the ends, worn diagonally from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Jackson made his Army of the Valley travel light. No knapsacks, no surplus kit, just the roll, a haversack for rations, and a canteen. The result was the "foot cavalry": in the spring of 1862, Jackson's men covered 646 miles in forty-eight days, fought five battles against three separate Union armies, and won them all. The marching pace was twenty-five miles a day, sometimes more.
Six identical privates at the right shoulder shift — the standard marching carry where the musket rests barrel-up on the right shoulder, butt forward, hand on the small of the stock. Gray shell jackets, light gray trousers, black slouch hats, bayonets fixed and gleaming above the column. The figures are designed to be deployed as a six-man marching squad — the standard width of a Civil War company column. Pair the set with Confederate Infantry Marching with Flag at the head of the column, with Confederate Infantry with Color Bearer for the color guard scene, or with General Lee reviewing them on the march.
