RAF Bomber Command fought the whole war and paid one of the heaviest prices of any Allied force. Flying by night — while the Americans bombed by day, giving Germany no rest around the clock — its crews faced flak, night fighters, ice, and the sheer hazard of navigating the dark in a heavy bomber. A tour was thirty operations, and for long stretches a man's chances of surviving it were poor: of roughly 125,000 who served as aircrew, some 55,000 were killed. The campaign grew from cautious strikes on ports and railways into the vast, and still-debated, area bombing of German cities.

The figure walks out in full flight gear — Sidcot suit, Mae West and parachute harness, flying helmet with goggles and oxygen mask — carrying his parachute pack and a kit bag toward the aircraft. He anchors a "round-the-clock offensive" display: pair him with his daylight counterpart, the U.S.A.A.F. Heavy Bomber Crewman, set him on an RAF airfield beside fighter ace Douglas Bader, and place it all under Winston Churchill.
