Rangers are led on the ground by sergeants. Fire team leaders at E-5, squad leaders at E-6 — the men who moved with the rifles, called movement, and made split-second decisions about who fired, who covered, and who moved next. In Mogadishu on October 3, 1993, comms were a mess. Four separate radio nets carried Ranger tactical, Delta, aircraft, and the Joint Operations Center; frequencies clashed, transmissions overlapped, some radios died. When higher headquarters couldn't reach the squads, the sergeants decided the fight themselves. "Rangers Lead the Way" — the motto, from Colonel Cota's order at Omaha Beach in 1944 — described the NCO's job every hour of that operation.
