Urban combat has no front line. Threats came at Rangers in Mogadishu from every direction at once — rooftops overhead, doorways to the flanks, alleys behind. Somali militia routinely let a squad pass through an intersection and then opened fire from the rear, targeting the last men who had just walked past them. That made the drag position — the rear security man — one of the most exposed jobs in the squad. He walked half-turned or crab-stepped backward, weapon ready, scanning the ground the squad had just crossed. In a patrol of eight men through hostile territory, he had the whole compass behind him.
