The rule for moving under fire was the three-to-five-second rush. Army individual movement doctrine taught soldiers to think or say it aloud as they moved: "I'm up, he sees me, I'm down." That was your window before an enemy could bring aimed fire onto you. On October 3 and 4, 1993, Rangers ran that rush hundreds of times in the streets around the Olympic Hotel — from a doorway to a vehicle, from a vehicle to a wall, from a wall into a building. Any move longer than five seconds meant the shooter tracking you had a solid firing solution.
