The Army's smallest tactical unit is the four-man fire team: team leader, rifleman, grenadier, and automatic rifleman with the M249 SAW. But the team fights as two-man pairs — each pair moves while the other covers, alternating in bounding overwatch. That was the pattern Rangers used across every block of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. One pair broke cover and moved, the other pair held down suppression, then they switched.
