Until 1758 Rogers' Rangers had no uniform to speak of. That winter Robert Rogers had clothing made for his men through Albany, and on 22 April 1758 the purchasing agent, John Macomb, described it in a letter to the New York merchants Gregg & Cunningham. Most of it was green cloth: green jackets lined with green serge, with metal buttons. Macomb added that Scotch bonnets would sell well, since the Rangers who could get them wore nothing else on scout. Indian-style leggings tied at the knee protected their legs from brush and briars. The green jacket and the Scots bonnet became the nearest thing the Rangers had to a standard dress.

Don Troiani paints a ranger at rest in that dress. He stands with his long musket grounded beside him and a hatchet in his other hand, wearing a blue Scots bonnet and a green jacket over a black neck stock. A powder horn and shot pouch hang from a red tasselled strap across his chest, with a leather pouch at his belt. Green leggings are tied below the knee with red tasselled garters above his moccasins. W. Britain sculpted Rogers' Rangers Private, 1758 from this painting, so the print and figure display naturally together. Add Rogers' Rangers Standing Firing, No.1, or Tradition of London's Rogers Rangers North America 1750 for a gloss display.
