Five days after Montreal capitulated in September 1760, Major Robert Rogers set out west to take over the French posts on the Great Lakes. He left Montreal on 13 September with about two hundred rangers in fifteen whaleboats. The route ran past the ruined French posts at the sites of Kingston and Toronto, with a stop at Fort Pitt for orders. Ahead of him he sent word to Captain Belestre, commanding at Detroit, that Canada had surrendered and the western posts now belonged to King George. On 29 November Belestre handed over Detroit, the largest French garrison left in the west. Ice on Lake Huron stopped Rogers from going on to Michilimackinac.

Rogers stands at the centre of the set with one hand on his hip and his musket on his shoulder. He wears a black bonnet, a green coat and buff leggings tied at the knee. Beside him is a Native scout in a long white hunting shirt, with a shaved head and scalp lock, a blue breechcloth and grey leggings, his musket grounded. The six rangers wear blue bonnets and green coats, with grey blanket rolls and brown pouches. Two kneel to fire, two stand firing, and two are loading and making ready. Add the eight men of Rogers Rangers North America 1750 to build a full company. Bring in American Woodland Indians as scouts, and hang Don Troiani's Rogers' Rangers Private, 1758 behind them.
