The regimental colors marched at the center of the line, and so did the men assigned to protect them. Union regulations set up a color guard of one color sergeant and eight corporals, picked for their steadiness under fire. They formed around the regiment's two flags: the national Stars and Stripes, and the dark blue regimental color with its painted eagle. The flags told the whole regiment where to form, where to rally, and which way to move, and in the smoke they were often the only thing a soldier could see. That was exactly why the enemy aimed at them. In hard fights, color guards were sometimes shot down to the last man, and the flag passed from hand to hand until someone got it back to the line.
