Ordered by Roosevelt to abandon the doomed Philippines in March 1942, Douglas MacArthur slipped out of besieged Corregidor by PT boat and, reaching Australia, made a promise that became the most famous three words of his career: "I shall return." He spent two and a half years making good on it, and on 20 October 1944 waded ashore at Leyte to redeem the pledge in person. The son of a Medal of Honor–winning Civil War general — and himself awarded the medal in 1942 for the Philippines defense — MacArthur had graduated top of his West Point class, was promoted five-star General of the Army late in 1944, and on 2 September 1945 accepted the formal Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri.

The figure captures his unmistakable look: open-collar khakis, the gold-encrusted Field Marshal's cap, and the corncob pipe in hand mid-gesture. As a Pacific command anchor he pairs with his Navy counterpart Admiral Nimitz and the ace he decorated, Richard Bong, and stands among the war's great theater commanders alongside General Eisenhower.
