After Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt reached past 28 more senior admirals to hand Chester Nimitz the shattered Pacific Fleet, telling him to get out to Hawaii and not come back until the war was won. Nimitz took command on the deck of a submarine amid the wreckage on the last day of 1941. His defining decision came six months later: trusting the codebreakers who had partly cracked the Japanese naval cipher, he laid an ambush off Midway that sank four enemy carriers in a single day and turned the Pacific war. A quiet Texan who disliked showmanship, he commanded at the peak more than two million personnel, 5,000 ships, and 20,000 aircraft — and signed the Japanese surrender for the United States aboard the USS Missouri.

The figure presents Nimitz in Navy officer khaki service dress with the peaked cap, standing composed with hands clasped. As the command anchor of a Pacific naval display he pairs naturally with his Army counterpart, General Douglas MacArthur, and presides over the enlisted men of his fleet — the Sailor in Crackerjacks and the Sailor in Whites with Seabag.
