Lyndon Johnson was a sitting Congressman when he went to war. Commissioned a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve in 1940, he reported for active duty just after Pearl Harbor — the first member of Congress to do so — and President Roosevelt sent him to survey conditions in the South Pacific. In June 1942 he flew as an observer aboard a B-26 Marauder on a strike against the Japanese base at Lae, New Guinea. General MacArthur awarded him the Silver Star for the flight, a decoration debated ever since, given that he was a passenger and others on the mission went undecorated. Roosevelt soon recalled the lawmakers in uniform to Washington.

The figure presents Johnson in Navy officer khaki service dress with the peaked cap, standing with hands on his hips. He belongs in a "future presidents in uniform" display: group him with fellow naval officers Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, and George H.W. Bush.
