A warship was a floating factory, and its crew were specialists. The plain white jumper carried the story of the man who wore it: on the sleeve, a rating badge combined his rank with his trade — the spread-winged eagle, the "crow," perched above a mark for his specialty. A modern vessel needed dozens of them — gunner's mates and machinist's mates, radiomen, signalmen, boatswain's mates, cooks, electricians, and more — each a trained hand keeping a complex machine fighting. Service stripes on the cuff, one for every four years, marked the old salts. The uniform looked simple, but to a sailor's eye it announced exactly who a man was and what he could do.

The figure stands at ease in undress whites — the white cotton jumper with its black tar-flap collar and neckerchief, white trousers, and the stiff-brimmed "Dixie Cup." Muster him with the ship's company in a pierside diorama alongside the Sailor in Whites with Seabag and the Sailor in Crackerjacks, under Admiral Nimitz.

W. Britain model 13053. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure on a sculpted base. Boxed.
