By 1864 the 146th New York was part of what was essentially a Zouave brigade within the V Corps. The 5th New York Volunteers ("Duryée's Zouaves") had been the celebrated early-war Zouave regiment, mustered out in 1863; the surviving veterans had reenlisted as the 5th Veteran New York Volunteers and joined the same brigade as the 146th NY. The 140th New York, also dressed in French-pattern Zouave kit, was a third regiment in the same formation. Three Zouave regiments serving together in Sykes's V Corps Regular Division gave the brigade a distinctive look on the march, in camp, and on the battlefield — the visible Zouave reputation of the early war kept alive in the Overland Campaign of 1864.

He wears the regiment's distinctive French-Turco pattern Zouave kit: red fez with yellow tassel, sky-blue jacket with yellow soutache decoration on the chest, the red waist sash with brass U.S. buckle, baggy sky-blue trousers, white cloth leggings above black shoes. The Zouave figure is the visual centerpiece of any V Corps Overland Campaign diorama.
