A Civil War drummer was the regimental clock. The day began at reveille — usually around five in the morning — when the drummer beat the assembly. Every soldier's day in camp was then paced by a sequence of distinctive drum calls: sick call, breakfast, drill, dinner, watch setting, retreat at sundown, tattoo, and finally taps. The drummer reported to the regimental commander; his rolls carried farther through camp than any human voice. On the march he set the cadence; on the parade ground he timed the manual of arms; in battle he beat the long roll that signaled the regiment was going in.
The eight-figure set is a regimental column on the march: officer at the head with drawn sword, sergeant alongside, drummer beating the cadence at the center with his red-hooped snare drum, and five privates following at right shoulder shift with bayonets fixed. Federal regulation dress throughout — dark blue frock coats, sky-blue trousers, black forage caps, white cross-belts. Pair the column with the standalone Privates Union Infantry Marching set to extend the regiment to fourteen figures, with Union Infantry with Color Bearer bringing the colors up beside the drummer, or with Mounted General Grant reviewing the column from horseback.
