Notice the horse. Cavalry regiments had a long-standing tradition, carried over from European armies, of mounting their trumpeters on grays or whites. In the dust and confusion of a mounted fight, a commanding officer needed to find his trumpeter instantly, because every order he gave the regiment had to go out as a trumpet call. Advance, halt, charge, rally, and retreat all had their own notes. A pale horse stood out against a column of bays and chestnuts and showed the officer where his musician was. The 29th Texas, fighting dismounted as often as mounted in Indian Territory and Arkansas, still depended on its trumpeters to signal the regiment when spread out over rough ground.
