The yellow kepi on this officer comes straight out of the Confederate army's 1861 uniform regulations. The rules called for a cap with a dark blue band and a crown in the color of the soldier's branch: red for artillery, light blue for infantry, and yellow for cavalry. Facings on the collar and cuffs were meant to match. The army didn't issue officers their uniforms, though. They bought them from tailors or had them made at home, so what an officer wore depended on his means and how close he was to a city. In the Trans-Mississippi, far from Richmond, few Confederate officers ever matched the regulations completely, and the ones who did stood out on the field.

The figure rides a dun horse with a black mane and legs, turned toward his men with his mouth open as he shouts and his revolver raised in his right hand. He wears a gray jacket with a yellow front and collar and gold buttons, gray trousers with a yellow stripe, buff gauntlets, tall black boots, and the yellow cavalry kepi with a dark band. A canteen and saddlebags hang from a blue saddle blanket bordered in yellow. Lead the regiment with the 29th Texas Cavalry Flagbearer and the 29th Texas Trumpeter, or place him under Major General J.E.B. Stuart.
