France's alliance with the Woodland nations in this war rested on a treaty half a century old. In the summer of 1701 more than 1,300 delegates from 39 nations gathered at Montreal to make peace with the French and with one another. The Wendat leader Kondiaronk argued hardest for a settlement that included every nation at war. He fell ill during the talks and died before the treaty was signed on 4 August. Under the Great Peace, former enemies freed their prisoners and agreed to settle disputes by diplomacy, and the Haudenosaunee promised to stay neutral in future wars between France and England. The French governor, whom the nations called Onontio, sat at the centre of the alliance that followed.

The chief stands at the centre with his musket grounded. He wears a tricorne trimmed with red and white feathers, a white shirt and a blue coat laced in gold, likely a French gift. Around him seven warriors go into action. Two fire standing, two kneel to fire, and three charge with tomahawks and a war club raised, one of them in a yellow trade shirt. Most have red-painted heads with scalp locks, red or blue breechcloths, dark leggings and moccasins. Fight them beside Compagnies Franches de la Marines and Franches de la Marines. Set them against Rogers Rangers North America 1750.
