On 29 February 1756, in the depth of a Canadian winter, Lieutenant Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry left Montreal with about 360 men: troupes de la marine, Canadian militia, and Iroquois and Huron allies. Their target was Fort Bull, a British supply depot at the Oneida Carry, the overland link between the Mohawk River and the waterways to Lake Ontario. After a march of some 170 miles they ambushed a supply convoy on the carry road and crept to within a hundred yards of the fort, then stormed it on 27 March. The fort was destroyed and its stores blown up or dumped into Wood Creek, just as the British were preparing the season's campaign.
These are the colony's regulars dressed for the woods rather than the parade ground. The officer, in a dark blue coat laced with gold, points out the target. His seven men wear white coats tied with red sashes, wool caps, and dark leggings with red garters. They fire standing, kneeling and crouching, ready to move. Add Franches de la Marines to double the raiding party, with American Woodland Indians (French Allies) alongside them, as at Fort Bull. Set Rogers Rangers North America 1750 opposite for the other side of the forest war.
