In July 1758 King George II made the 42nd Foot a royal regiment. With the new title, the Royal Highland Regiment, came a visible change. The facings, the coloured lapels and cuffs on the red coat, switched from buff to royal blue, the colour reserved for royal regiments. The honour was granted in London in the same month the regiment was cut to pieces in the assault on Fort Carillon at Ticonderoga. A second battalion was raised in Scotland that year. From then on, the Highlanders served in blue facings through the conquest of Canada and the campaigns in the West Indies.

This grenadier stands square with his cheek to the stock, sighting down the barrel of his musket. He wears the black fur cap of the grenadier company, the tallest men in the battalion, and a red coat with blue lapels and cuffs edged in white lace. Below that are a dark Government-sett tartan plaid, red-and-white diced hose and buckled shoes. A basket-hilted broadsword hangs in its black scabbard at his left hip. Build a firing line by pairing him with 42nd Grenadier Standing Tearing Cartridge, 42nd Battalion Company Standing Make Ready and 42nd Grenadier Standing Firing No.2, so the display walks through the loading drill on a stretch of wooded frontier ground.
