On September 19, 1864, Confederate cavalry in Indian Territory pulled off one of the most profitable raids of the war. At Cabin Creek in present-day Oklahoma, a Cherokee brigade under Stand Watie and a brigade of Texas cavalry under Richard Gano caught a Union supply train on its way to Fort Gibson. They captured about 130 wagons loaded with food, clothing, and supplies, valued at roughly $1.5 million, and drove off the escort. For Southern troopers who had spent the war short of nearly everything, it was a windfall. The 29th Texas rode with Gano's Texans, and the captured wagons fed and clothed Confederate units in the territory through the coming winter.

The figure rides a black horse with white stockings, holding his carbine upright and ready as he moves into position, with his saber still in its scabbard. The yellow chevrons on his sleeve mark him as a corporal. He wears a gray shell jacket over butternut trousers, buff gauntlets, tall black boots, and a gray slouch hat, with a blue haversack and blanket roll on a gray saddle blanket.
