Texas raised more cavalry than any other Confederate state, and much of it came from men who already knew how to fight on horseback. Before the war, Texas frontier counties had organized mounted ranging companies to patrol against Comanche and Kiowa raids, and a generation of young men had grown up in the saddle with a rifle across the pommel. When the war came, Texans overwhelmingly chose to enlist in the cavalry. Regiments like the 29th Texas went to war with sergeants who had ridden long patrols in rough country before they ever wore a uniform. What they lacked in drill and equipment, they made up for in horsemanship and in knowing how to keep men moving across open ground.

The figure sits a brown horse with its head lowered, his carbine at the shoulder and his aim fixed down the barrel. The yellow chevrons on his sleeve mark him as a sergeant. He wears a gray shell jacket with yellow cavalry collar and cuffs, sky-blue trousers with a yellow stripe, and a black slouch hat, with his saber at his side. His blanket roll and saddlebags ride on a gray saddle blanket trimmed in red. Pair him with the Confederate Cavalry Corporal Holding Carbine and the Confederate Cavalry Trooper Aiming Carbine, or put the Confederate Cavalry Officer in command.

King & Country model CW109. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Mounted figure of a Confederate cavalry sergeant firing his carbine, on a sculpted groundwork base. Boxed.
