By September 1760, what was left of the French army in Canada was gathered at Montreal, with three British armies closing in. Governor Vaudreuil agreed to surrender, but General Amherst refused the French regulars the honours of war, the custom that let a defeated army march out with its colours flying. The Chevalier de Lรฉvis, who commanded the army, wanted to fight on and was overruled. On the night before the capitulation was signed on 8 September, the regiments' colours were burned on รŽle Sainte-Hรฉlรจne rather than handed to the British. Under the terms the regulars laid down their arms and were shipped home to France.

The officer stands at the centre with his sword in one hand and his other fist raised, urging his men on. Around him, privates fire with their muskets levelled. One has lost his hat and fires bareheaded, with the hat lying at his feet, and others stand at the ready with bayonets fixed. They wear the grey-white coats of the French line with blue cuffs and lapels, blue waistcoats and breeches, yellow-buff belts, white gaiters and black tricornes edged in white. Add French Infantry for the colour, drummer and sergeants. Bring in French Artillery Gun (Seven Years War) in support, and hang Don Troiani's French Fusilier Regiment Berry, 1758 print behind the display.
