On the afternoon of April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee left the McLean house at Appomattox Court House, mounted Traveller, and rode back to what was left of the Army of Northern Virginia. Word of the surrender had gone ahead of him. As he came up the road, his soldiers crowded around the horse, some cheering, many crying, reaching up to touch Traveller or Lee's boots. Lee, who had kept his composure through the meeting with Grant, could barely speak. He raised his hat to the men, told them they had done their duty and should go home and be good citizens, and rode slowly on to his headquarters. For many of those veterans, it was the last time they saw him.
The figure catches Lee at that moment, raising his gray slouch hat with a gloved hand from the saddle of Traveller, his dapple-gray horse, walking forward with its head lowered. Lee wears his gray general's frock coat with a buff sash, buff gauntlets, and tall black boots, with a blue saddle blanket beneath a brown saddle. Pair him with Major General J.E.B. Stuart, his cavalry chief, add the 29th Texas Cavalry Flagbearer for a Confederate command display, or set him beside the Union Brigadier General Strong Vincent for both sides of Gettysburg.
