The rifle musket could hit a man at several hundred yards, but most Civil War soldiers missed high. Under stress men jerked the trigger, forgot to adjust their sights, and fired over the heads of the enemy. It got worse on a slope: shooting downhill, soldiers overshot almost by instinct. Officers answered with one of the most repeated orders of the war: "Aim low." Men were told to aim at the enemy's belt, or even his knees, and let the heavy .58 caliber Minié ball do the rest. On July 2, 1863, the 83rd Pennsylvania was firing down the rocky face of Little Round Top at Confederates climbing toward them, which is exactly the kind of fight where that order mattered.
