The 20th Maine's stand at the far end of Little Round Top is one of the most famous stories of the Civil War, but it didn't happen alone. Right next to the 20th Maine, on its right, was the 83rd Pennsylvania, commanded that afternoon by Captain Orpheus Woodward. As the Alabama regiments pressed Joshua Chamberlain's line, Chamberlain asked Woodward for help. Woodward had no men to spare, but he stretched the 83rd's line to the left so it could cover more ground, freeing Chamberlain to bend his own flank back and keep it from being turned. The two regiments held their part of the hill together until the 20th Maine's bayonet charge ended the attack.

The figure lies flat behind his rifle musket, taking careful aim down the barrel with the bayonet fixed, the steadiest firing position a soldier could find and the smallest target he could make of himself. His knapsack, blanket roll, and cartridge box are all in place, and he wears K&C's 83rd Pennsylvania uniform: dark blue chasseur jacket with yellow trim, green shoulder tufts, sky-blue trousers, and white gaiters, with a red corps badge on his forage cap. Pair him with Lying Ready for a two-man position among the rocks, add the Kneeling Infantryman Firing Rifle, or put Brigadier General Strong Vincent behind the line.
