The red mark on this soldier's forage cap is a corps badge — a system introduced by Army of the Potomac commander Joseph Hooker in March 1863 to build unit identity. Each corps got a distinctive shape: I Corps a disc, II Corps a trefoil, III Corps a diamond, V Corps a Maltese cross. Colors within the corps marked the division: red for 1st, white for 2nd, blue for 3rd. The 83rd Pennsylvania belonged to Strong Vincent's brigade in the 1st Division of V Corps — the red Maltese cross men who held the far left at Little Round Top on July 2, 1863.

The figure kneels on his right knee, left knee raised, rifle musket at the shoulder with iron sights aligned, bayonet fixed. He wears the K&C 83rd Pennsylvania interpretation of Union infantry dress — dark blue frock coat with yellow trim, sky-blue trousers with white gaiters, red corps badge on the kepi. Blanket roll and knapsack ride on his back with a tin cup tied to the pack, cartridge box on the belt. Pair the figure with Brigadier General Strong Vincent directing the regiment from behind, with the Sergeant with Regimental Flag anchoring the color guard, or with Infantry Advancing Shooting to extend the firing line.

King & Country model CW138. 1/30 scale (approximately 60mm), matte-painted metal. Single foot figure of Union 83rd Pennsylvania infantryman kneeling firing rifle musket with bayonet fixed, on sculpted groundwork base. Boxed.
