The Ranger deployment to Somalia was called Operation Gothic Serpent. It began in August 1993 as a manhunt: Task Force Ranger — Bravo Company, 3rd Ranger Battalion; Squadron C, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta; and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment — was sent to Mogadishu to capture General Mohamed Farrah Aidid and his senior lieutenants. Six raids on suspected Aidid locations produced no captures. The seventh raid, on the Olympic Hotel in the Bakara Market on the afternoon of October 3, went in expecting another routine operation. It became the largest single American firefight since Vietnam. Fifteen hours later, eighteen Americans were dead.

The two-figure set catches a Ranger fire team in the classic bounding overwatch: the lead man crouches slightly with M16A2 at low ready, weight forward, watching his firing lane; the trailing man advances behind with M16A2 raised in the higher-ready position, covering the arc his partner isn't watching. Both wear three-color desert combat uniform, tactical vests, and Kevlar helmets with PVS-7 night vision mounts and ballistic goggles. Pair the set with the Ranger Covering the Rear as the drag man in the same movement, with the Rangers M249 SAW Team providing suppressive base of fire, or with the Ranger NCO Shouting Orders directing the advance.
