Collection: Classical Gloss - Civil War Toy Soldiers

The gloss-painted toy soldier is the traditional style of the hobby — bright, shiny lacquer that catches the light, the look of a Victorian or Edwardian collector's cabinet, and the way W. Britain Ltd painted figures from 1893 until the 1960s before matte "military style" finishes took over. This collection brings the classical style to the American Civil War: Union and Confederate generals, infantry, cavalry, artillery, and naval figures, sold as multi-figure sets rather than individual pieces. The scale is 1/30 (approximately 54mm), the same as W. Britain and K&C, which means classical gloss sets share display ground with the rest of the catalog despite the difference in finish.

The named figures anchor the collection at the command level. Mounted General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee lead the two sides. The two staff scenes — Lincoln and His Generals and Lee and His Generals — bring the high command into multi-figure groups suitable as the centerpiece of a display. Each set captures the political-military relationship that defined the war: Lincoln managing the army through the crisis of leadership that finally produced Grant, and Lee surrounded by Longstreet, Jackson, Stuart, and the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia's command.

The unit sets cover both sides at every level. Confederate infantry — Privates Marching, Infantry with Color Bearer, Charging, Firing and Loading — Confederate cavalry, artillery with a 12-pounder, and the unusual Confederate Navies at Attention. Union sets mirror them with infantry marching, charging, firing and loading, cavalry, artillery, heavy artillery, and Union Navies. The standout regimental set is the 5th New York Zouaves — Duryée's Zouaves, the famous red-trousered early-war regiment that took 60% casualties in ten minutes at Second Bull Run.
